Appeal to Hoteliers to join Towns Conference Initiative
The New Chairman of the Eastbourne Hospitality Association is calling on more Hotels to join a new Conference Bureau aimed at bringing more business to the town.
Heidi Cowderoy has been selected to Chair the EHA for a second term and during this weeks AGM called on members to support the initiative.
The EHA has invested £5,000 into the venture and gone into partnership with the Council to set up the Bureau, which aims to refocus Eastbourne as a top conference destination. Hotels and Guesthouses pay to join the scheme, which will give them priority bookings with delegates.
Heidi, who also owns The East Beach Hotel, says, "Already the Bureau has got off to a terrific start booking 8 new conferences for the town, which will bring over 8,500 delegates. It means all local businesses will benefit."
Also at the AGM members heard that the EHA will continue to support local events like the Beachy Head Marathon, The Half Marathon and Airbourne. During the last year it has also sponsored the Beachy Head Chaplaincy team and helped catering students at South Downs College.
The Eastbourne Hospitality Association represents over 200 hotels, Guesthouses, Self Catering establishments, Attractions and Restaurants. Edward Lewis of the Lansdowne Hotel continues as President and this years Vice Chairmen are Marco Giorgi of the Afton Hotel and Lynda Couch-Smith of The Cherry Tree Guesthouse.

New look for building firm
An Eastbourne-based building company has unveiled a new look. Ellis, one of the fastest growing businesses in the regional construction sector, has undergone its own face-lift with a whole new visual identity. The changes include a new logo, corporate literature, signage, vehicle livery and web site.
The growth of Ellis has created a number of employment opportunities, with local people filling essential jobs and boosting the team to more than 100 full-time and sub-contracted staff. This trend is set to continue, having successfully won several major contracts in the south east in recent months.
Derek Godfrey, managing director at Ellis, said, "Our old corporate branding didn't reflect the modern and forward looking business that we are now. We are delighted with the work our design team have done."
The new look was launched at the Grand Hotel where Ellis has recently completed a number of key projects including a new car park and sun terrace.

World Class Tennis Break in Eastbourne
Eastbourne presents a world class getaway this June with tennis star, Ana Ivanovic, ranked the No 2 player in the world, making her Devonshire Park debut in two weeks.
The International Women's Open is already attracting top tennis names from around the world when it returns from 14 - 21 June, including Amelie Mauresmo, Lindsay Davenport and Marion Bartoli. Boasting some of the highest calibre grass courts in the world, Eastbourne makes a first class destination for a June getaway with the opportunity to watch international stars up close.
Eastbourne Borough Council Spokesperson for Tourism, Cllr Steve Wallis said, "This year's championships are shaping up to be one of the best tournaments yet in the event's 33-year history. Boosted by the fantastic news earlier this year that from 2009 the men's tournament will join the women's at Devonshire Park, Eastbourne is becoming recognised alongside top sporting destinations across the globe. Anyone visiting Eastbourne within the next few weeks is sure to be gripped by tennis fever."
With Ladies Day, Twilight Tennis and Tennis on the Beach all scheduled into the weeklong tournament for 2008, Devonshire Park offers a real garden party atmosphere.
Girls will be lining up to get their glad rags on for Ladies Day on Tuesday 17th June when all visitors to the event will be able to pick up a goody bag. There is a chance to watch all the action on the prestigious grass courts, do some celebrity spotting and top the day off with a glass of champagne.
Or for those who are hard at work during the day and miss out on the tennis action, organisers are introducing a Twilight Tennis session for the first time on Wednesday 18th June. With a main draw match starting at 6pm, spectators can come along after work to enjoy a 3rd round match with cocktails and Boogie Woogie blues entertainment from Big Al's Trio after the match.
Plus kids can join in the tennis action too with Tennis on the Beach. Kidzone activities will take place Monday - Friday on Eastbourne's Western Lawns with children from local schools being coached by staff from the LTA.
With plenty of places to choose from when it comes to finding somewhere to stay in Eastbourne, spectators enjoying the International Women's Open can opt for 5-star luxury, small friendly guesthouses, or harbour-side apartments. See http://www.visiteastbourne.com for accommodation inspiration.
June also sees the opening of the town's new da Vinci Hotel. Eastbourne's first art hotel is located less than a 5 minute walk from Devonshire Park and is taking bookings now.

Hotel meets the highest standard
The Guild of Master Victuallers (GMV) is an association of publicans that has just held its second annual conference in Eastbourne, centred at the Glastonbury Hotel. I reside in Polegate but members attending the conference come from all corners of the UK.
The level of service from the hotel staff and the quality of the banquet catering on our first visit to Eastbourne at the 2007 conference convinced us that we should return to Eastbourne in 2008. We were a little concerned that the high standards set by the Glastonbury would be difficult to uphold in 2008, but without a doubt they enhanced their reputation.
The GMV holds banquets, dinners and lunches all over the UK including hotels in Park Lane, London and we are sincere when we say, regarding the quality of the catering, the Glastonbury could hold their own with many finer hotels.
The immediate past Mayor, Councillor Mary Pooley, attended the banquets in both years along with more than 100 publicans, their wives and representatives from national drinks industry companies.
The purpose of this letter is to demonstrate that the GMV feel that after two years of such service from the Glastonbury Hotel their efforts should be publicly appreciated an that Eastbourne should be aware that they have a "jewel in the crown" with regard function facilities. The GMV looks forward to a return to Eastbourne.

Laptop Gift for Lifeboat Crew
The RNLI Lifeboat Station has been presented with a state of the art laptop computer along with all the latest training software and peripherals by the owners of an Eastbourne Hotel. Jerome and Carol Farrow from the Marine Parade Hotel presented the laptop along with a cheque for £690. They raised the money by selling raffle tickets to their guests throughout last year.
The valuable training software includes navigation, simulated radar and lights and buoyage systems, which can all be used in the training of new and existing lifeboat crewmembers. Mr and Mrs Farrow said they were delighted by the response of their guests to the idea of holding the weekly raffles in aid of Eastbourne RNLI.
Additionally, it is anticipated similar raffles will be held throughout this year and again enable them to raise valuable funds for the organisation.
